Fudge Buttercream Frosting

I made this frosting to go on top of cupcakes. It’s rich and chocolatey and oh so sweet. It’s a completely simple recipe and you should definitely give it a try.


You need some shortening. Do you know what shortening is? For the longest time, I had no idea, and everytime a recipe called for shortening I’d call my grandma and ask her what it was? It’s Crisco she’d always say. Now they have these fancy sticks of Crisco for baking, you just cut it like you do a stick of butter. Easy peasy!


Stick the shortening and some butter in a big mixing bowl.


And beat it until its creamy.


Sift together some powdered sugar and cocoa powder.


Combine the sugar and butter mixtures, a little bit at a time.


Add some milk, as needed to keep the mixture smooth. Just don’t add more than 3 tbsp, or it won’t set up right. (Don’t mind the color in this photo, my lighting was lousy.)


The secret ingredient…hot fudge topping!


Add it in, along with some vanilla.


And beat it until it’s smooth and creamy.


This spoonful is on it’s way to my mouth! Mmmmmm…chocolate!!!

Unfortunately I neglected to take a picture of the frosted cupcakes, so you’ll just have to imagine them. I doubled this recipe and it frosted about 48 cupcakes, so a single batch is probably equivilant to one of those store bought tubs of frosting. Seriously try this recipe, it only takes minutes to make and it tastes so much better than anything you can buy.
